A pallet tipper, also known as a pallet inverter or pallet turner, is a machine that tilts a full pallet of cargo 90 or 180 degrees. That sounds simple, but in practice, this machine makes a world of difference: replacing damaged pallets without unloading the cargo, turning products over for quality control, or transferring goods from a product pallet to a transport pallet without manual lifting. In this article, you’ll learn step by step how to operate a pallet tipper correctly and safely, from positioning the pallet to long-term maintenance.
Whether you work in a warehouse, a manufacturing facility, or a distribution center, a pallet turner significantly increases efficiency and reduces the physical strain on employees. Follow the steps below to get the most out of this equipment.
Here's how to position the pallet correctly in the tilting device
Proper positioning is the foundation of a safe and efficient tilting operation. Mistakes at this stage can result in damage to the load or the machine—or, in the worst case, accidents. Take the time to position the pallet accurately before proceeding.
- First, check whether the pallet and load are suitable for the tipper: pay attention to the maximum load capacity (usually listed on the machine's nameplate) and the dimensions of the pallet.
- Make sure the load is stable on the pallet and, if necessary, wrapped or secured with stretch film or straps. Loose items can shift when the pallet is tilted and cause damage.
- Using a pallet jack or forklift, drive the pallet straight into the tipper, centered over the pressure pads. A pallet that is positioned at an angle can damage the machine or cause the load to fall.
- Close the clamp or pressure plate so that the load is securely clamped between the two platforms of the tipper. Visually check to make sure there are no protruding items that could get caught.
Once the clamp is closed, the pallet should not be able to move. If there is any play or the load looks unstable, open the clamp again and adjust its position. Do not proceed until everything is securely fastened.
Performing and Monitoring the Tilting Motion
Once the pallet is correctly positioned and clamped in place, the actual tilting motion can begin. Depending on the model, you can operate this using a manual control panel, a foot pedal, or an automated control system. How exactly does a pallet tipper work during this phase? The machine rotates the entire load in a controlled manner through the preset angle, while the clamp holds the goods in place.
- Set the desired tilt angle using the control panel: 90 degrees for changing pallets, 180 degrees for completely turning the load over.
- Make sure that everyone is at a safe distance from the machine and outside its movement zone. Activate any safety guards or light curtains if the machine is equipped with them.
- Start the tilting motion and remain at the control panel. If you notice anything unusual—such as an unusual noise, vibration, or shifting of the load—stop the motion immediately using the emergency stop button.
- Allow the machine to complete the entire tilting motion until it reaches the set end position. Never force the motion manually or attempt to make the machine rotate faster than the set speed.
Once the tilting motion is complete, the load will be in its new position. Visually check to make sure the goods are still intact and stable before releasing the clamp. If the load has visibly shifted, reapply the clamping pressure and assess whether it is safe to proceed.
Safely Remove the Cargo After Tipping
Once the tilting motion is complete, it’s time to remove the load from the machine. This may seem like the simplest step, but mistakes can still be made here that could cause damage or injury. Work in an organized manner and don’t rush.
- Open the clamp slowly and carefully. Keep your eyes on the load: if the goods start to shift as you open it, close the clamp immediately and stabilize the situation.
- Slide an empty pallet under the load when you switch pallets, or check to make sure the original pallet is positioned correctly when you return the load to its place.
- Carefully move the pallet out of the tipper using a pallet jack or forklift. Be sure to drive straight and avoid hitting the sides of the machine.
- After unloading, check the cargo for damage and determine whether the goods need to be secured again with stretch wrap.
After unloading the cargo, the tipper is ready for the next cycle. If the machine does not return to its starting position automatically, return it manually, and make sure the work area is clear of obstacles for the next pallet.
When and for what purposes to use a pallet turner
Turning a pallet isn't just useful when a pallet is damaged. There are several situations in the warehouse or on the production floor where a pallet turner is the best solution. Knowing the right applications will help you use the equipment efficiently and avoid unnecessary steps.
- Pallet Replacement: Replace a damaged or non-compliant pallet with a new one without having to manually move the load.
- Quality control: Turn products over to inspect the underside, for example, when checking packaging or labels.
- Manufacturing processes: In industries such as food, pharmaceuticals, and printing, products are regularly turned over as part of the manufacturing process.
- Ergonomic improvement: Eliminate the need to manually lift and turn heavy goods, which significantly reduces back pain and employee absenteeism.
- Transferring goods from a product pallet to a shipping pallet: a common operation in distribution centers and warehouses.

Long-Term Maintenance and Safety
A pallet turner that is properly maintained will perform reliably and remain safe to use. Neglecting maintenance leads to wear and tear, unexpected downtime, and an increased risk of accidents. Establish a regular maintenance routine and document each inspection.
- Perform a daily visual inspection: check the clamps, pressure surfaces, hydraulic hoses, and control panel for visible wear or damage.
- Clean the machine regularly, paying special attention to the guide rails and moving parts. Remove dust, product residue, and dirt that could interfere with its operation.
- Lubricate moving parts according to the schedule in the manufacturer's manual. Always use the recommended lubricant.
- Have a qualified technician perform a technical inspection periodically, during which the hydraulics, electrical connections, and safety components are thoroughly checked.
- Train employees who operate the machine and ensure that everyone is familiar with the emergency stop procedure. Post the operating instructions in a visible location near the machine.
